Porridge Day 2017: Oatmeal Porridge for 14 000 Pupils

Porridge Day 2017: Oatmeal Porridge for 14 000 Pupils

This year Porridge day project was dedicated to first-grade students in Lithuania. After starting school, pupils gain more freedom in choosing their meals and snacks. We wanted to help them make those choices wisely. Almost 14 thousand first grade pupils from 300 schools in Lithuania took part in the project.

We wanted the project to engage with pupils, thus we came up with Porridge Picture Contest. This meant that every first-grade class applying for Porridge Day breakfast could also win a Porridge Day celebration. After a thorough selection process Dribsius and Dribsė – Porridge Day characters – decided on the winner which was the 1b class of Vilnius Šeškinė Elementary school.

košės diena

On the morning of October 10, Alfas Ivanauskas, a prominent chef in Lithuania, served the winners porridge which recipe had been based on their picture. Tasty breakfast was followed by a brief yet informative presentation on healthy eating habits and benefits of morning porridge, presented by a doctor-nutritionist doc. dr. E. Gavelienė.

The mission of Porridge Day Project continues to gain relevance, knowing that the number of children who have porridge for breakfast is declining annually. According to representative research, 25 % of six-year-olds and only 6 % of seven-year-olds eat porridge for breakfast in Lithuania. The reason behind this is that parents substitute porridge with low nutritional value, unhealthy and sugary morning cereals.

We are glad that Porridge Day Projects helps children to develop healthy eating habits.

Malsena signs the “Bread Grown in Lithuania” manifesto

Malsena signs the “Bread Grown in Lithuania” manifesto

Lithuania has a long tradition of making rye bread known around the world. However, nowadays Lithuanian rye bread is often not entirely “Lithuanian”. In order to change the current situation on the 18th of August this year Malsena, in collaboration with “Vilniaus duona”, farmers and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Lithuania signed the “Bread Grown in Lithuania” manifesto.

The importance of this manifesto is undeniable – within the past decade the amount of rye grown in Lithuania has reduced three times, and around a third of the flour used for bread production is imported.

The aim of this long-term initiative is to seek that Lithuanian rye bread is made from rye flour grown and produced in Lithuania. The initiative also promotes traditional Lithuanian rye bread products and provides strong support for Lithuanian farmers. Malsena undertakes to buy the whole yield harvested by Lithuanian farmers participating in the project. As well as to educate consumers on Lithuanian rye bread, its origin and benefits, to take up social responsibility and to show solidarity in promoting the patriotism and pride in Lithuanian culinary heritage of citizens.

The “Bread Grown in Lithuania” initiative starts this August.

Malsena Invites Customers to Grow Oats Together

Malsena Invites Customers to Grow Oats Together

Would you believe us if we told you that oats were grown only as a fodder crop culture in Lithuania until early 2014? Which would be an absolute truth! We were the first ones in our country who brought and started to promote oat species suitable for human nutrition and, even, developed a special oat cultivation program which allowed to grow superior quality oats. Now, we invite our dear customers to immerse into a thrilling “field to fork” journey of Malsena oats, and witness how certified Scandinavian seeds turn into tasty oat flakes.

Malsena Promotes Healthy Friendly Meals in Lithuanian Schools

Malsena Promotes Healthy Friendly Meals in Lithuanian Schools

In the eve of World Health Day, Malsena gathered Government officials, business and school representatives, as well as, pupils and their parents to discuss the quality of meals at schools and potential ways to fight the prevailing unhealthy eating habits among children. The discussion was followed by healthy-friendly meals for all discussion participants and pupils of Vilniaus “Genio” progymnasium.

The recent research of SMLPC has shown that every second school child in Lithuania consumes sweets at least once or several times a day, and nearly quarter of school children are overweight.

In a light of the present situation, European Commission has directed all EU members to put in force national legislations which would require to improve nutritional values for school meals to an even greater extent by the end of 2017.

Ministry of Health of the Republic of Lithuania has already prepared and passed a program addressing the question. The newly passed program provides stricter regulations for children nutrition in schools (i.e. product ingredient list, quality, and menu), as well as, encourages the use of the “Key Hole” label products in children meals.

There are only around one hundred products listed under the “Key Hole” label, and we are proud that Malsena is the leading producer in this list.
